- ZYPREXA (olanzapine)
Treats symptoms of mental disorders and
schizophrenia.
You should not use this medication if you have had an
allergic reaction to olanzapine.
- Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to take and how
often.
- You may take the medicine with food or on an empty stomach.
- Store the tablets at room temperature away from heat, direct
light, and moisture.
- Keep all medicine out of the reach of children.
If you miss a dose:
- Take the missed dose as soon as possible, unless it is
almost time for your next dose.
- Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next
regular dose.
- You should not use two doses at the same time.
Warnings
- Make sure your doctor knows if you have heart or liver
disease, an enlarged prostate, glaucoma, or a history of seizures, breast cancer, or
severe constipation.
- If you are pregnant, talk to your doctor before taking this
medicine. If you become pregnant, tell your doctor.
- You should not breastfeed while taking olanzapine.
- This medicine may make you drowsy or dizzy. If it does,
avoid driving or using machinery.
- Dizziness may be worse if you get up too quickly from a
sitting or lying position. Getting up slowly after you have been sitting or lying down may
help decrease dizziness.
- This medicine may make you sweat less and keep your body
from cooling off. If your body gets too hot, you may have heat stroke. Be careful not to
get overheated in hot weather, when you are exercising, or if using a sauna or whirlpool.
- Some patients may have side effects that include muscle
spasms, twitching in the face and body, and uncontrolled tongue or jaw movement. If you
have questions about this or any other risks, talk to your doctor.
Side effects
Call your doctor right away if you have any of these
side effects:
- Fast or irregular heartbeat
- Feeling as if you need to be moving constantly
- High fever, muscle stiffness
- Increased sweating, thirst, or trouble urinating
- Muscle spasms, twitching, or uncontrolled tongue or jaw
movement
- Severe muscle weakness, trouble standing
- Trouble swallowing
If you have problems with these less serious side effects,
tell your doctor.
- Anxiety, restlessness, behavior problems
- Constipation
- Drowsiness or dizziness
- Dry mouth
- Shakiness
- Weight gain, swelling in feet or ankles
If you have other side effects that you think are
caused by this medicine, tell your doctor.
