Pravachol
Description
Treats ulcers, heartburn caused by acid from the stomach moving backwards into the
esophagus, and stomach problems that cause too much acid to build up. The over-the-counter
brand (non-prescription) treats acid indigestion and heartburn only. Belongs to a class of
drugs called histamine H2-receptor antagonists.

When you should not use this medicine
You should not use this medicine if you have ever had an allergic reaction to famotidine
or other histamine H2-receptor antagonists, such as ranitidine (Zantac®), cimetidine
(Tagamet®), and nizatidine (Axid®).
How to use and store this medicine
Your doctor will tell you how much medicine to take and how often. Keep all medicine away
from children.
Tablets/Suspension (liquid):
- If you are taking 1 dose daily, take it at bedtime. If you
are taking 2 doses daily, take one in the morning and one at bedtime. If you are taking
several doses daily, take your medicine with meals and at bedtime.
- Keep taking this medicine for the full time ordered by your
doctor, even if you are feeling better.
- If you take the liquid, shake the bottle well before each
use.
- Keep your medicine at room temperature, away from heat and
direct light. Do not freeze the liquid. Any unused liquid should be thrown away after 1
month.
If you miss a dose:
- Take your medicine as soon as you remember that you have
missed your dose.
- If it is nearly time for your next dose, wait until then to
take the medicine and skip the missed dose.
- You should not use two doses at the same time.
How to use this medicine
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter
medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.
- Make sure your doctor knows if you are also taking
ketoconazole (antifungal drug). You should take famotidine at least 2 hours after taking
ketoconazole.
- Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking. They can make your
stomach produce extra acid or keep the medicine from working.
Warnings
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor
before taking this medicine.
- Before taking this medicine, let your doctor know if you
have a history of kidney or liver disease.
- Do not give this medicine to anyone under age 16 without
your doctor's approval.
Side effects
Call your doctor right away if you have any of these side effects:
- Fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat
- Skin rash, hives, or itching
- Trouble breathing
- Unexplained fever, bruising
If you have problems with these less serious side effects,
talk with your doctor.
- Headache, dizziness
- Trouble sleeping
- Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset
- Ringing in the ears
- Constipation or diarrhea
