- DYAZIDE (hydrochlorothiazide)
Treats high blood pressure and fluid retention. This
medicine is a combination of two diuretics ("water pills"). Hydrochlorothiazide
belongs to the group of drugs called thiazide diuretics and triamterene belongs to the
group of drugs called potassium-sparing diuretics.
You should not use this medicine if you have had an
allergic reaction to triamterene, hydrochlorothiazide, other diuretic drugs such as
amiloride, spironolactone, or chlorthalidone, sulfa drugs, or if you are unable to
urinate.
How to use and store this medicine
- Take this medicine exactly as your doctor ordered. Even if
you feel fine your blood pressure can still be high.
- You will need to go the bathroom more often while you are
taking this medicine. To avoid having to go too often during the night, take this medicine
in the morning or if you take more than 1 dose a day take your last dose before 6 p.m.
(unless your doctor tells you differently).
- May be taken with or without food or milk.
- Store at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and
direct light.
- Keep out of the reach of children.
If you miss a dose:
- Take the missed dose as soon as possible.
- If it is almost time for your next regular dose, skip the
missed dose and return to your regular schedule.
- You should not use two doses at the same time.
Warnings
Call your doctor right away if you have any of these side
effects:
- Check with your doctor before taking if you have gout,
pancreatitis, heart, kidney, or liver disease, diabetes, or lupus.
- Talk with your doctor before use if you are pregnant or
breastfeeding.
- This medicine may increase the level of sugar in your blood
which can worsen diabetes.
- This medicine may increase the level of uric acid in your
blood which can worsen gout.
- This medicine can make your skin sensitive to sunlight. Use
a sunscreen when outdoors. Avoid tanning beds or sunlamps.
- To avoid dizziness from this medicine, stand up slowly from
a sitting or lying position.
Side effects
Call your doctor right away if you have any of these
side effects:
- Irregular heartbeat
- Wheezing or trouble breathing
- Skin rash, hives, or itching
- Unexplained fever, chills, sore throat, or unusual bruising
- Muscle weakness, pain, or cramps
If you have problems with these less serious side effects,
talk with your doctor.
- Dizziness, drowsiness, or headache
- Upset stomach, nausea, or loss of appetite
- Diarrhea or constipation
If you have other side effects that you think are caused by
this medicine, tell your doctor.
