Genital warts is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). About 4 million Americans suffer from genital warts, and it is the fastest growing sexually transmitted disease with 750,00 new cases each year.Genital warts often appear as groups of warts in the genital and perianal areas in females and males. The warts may be very small or can form large masses on the genital tissues. The warts can cause itching, burning, pain and tenderness. In women, the warts can occur on the vulva, perianal area, vagina and cervix. In men, genital warts can appear on the tip or shaft of the penis, urethra, scrotum, and perianal area. If untreated, genital warts can cause discomfort and pain and interfere with sexual activity and develop into a large fleshy cauliflower-like appearance.
Genital warts are highly contagious and are spread through sexual contact with an infected partner. A person recognizable can be infected with the HPV virus and be asymptomatic without any recognizable warts, but can still infect their sexual partners. Even after the warts disappear with treatment, individuals still may harbor the HPV virus and infect their partners.

Aldara Cream 5%, available by prescription only, is supplied in single-use packets that contain 250mg of the cream. The Aldara cream is applied to the affected area every other day, three times per week just prior to bedtime and is left on the skin for 6 - 10 hours. The cream is applied in a thin layer and rubbed into skin gently until the cream is no longer visible. The application site should not be occluded. Hand washing before and after applying cream is recommended. In the morning the cream is removed by washing the treated area with mild soap and water. Treatment should continue until there is a total clearance of the external genital/perianal warts or for a maximum of 16 weeks.
